Swiss Ecological Deficit Day 2016: March 22

Switzerland uses 4.4 times as much natural resources as its own ecosystems can renew. Over the course of a [leap] year, Switzerland’s own resources can meet the needs of its residents for just 82 days (366*4.4=82). In 2016, we exhausted Switzerland’s ecological budget on March 22.

In other words, we are living “on credit” as we deplete our natural capital. The consequences include fisheries collapse, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, topsoil erosion and climate change.
